ITHAKA

December 23, 2009 2 comments

As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon – don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that one on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon – you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.

Hope your road is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you enter harbours you’re seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfumes of every kind –
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and go on learning from their scholars.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.

Ithaka gave you the marvellous journey.
Without her you wouldn’t have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you’ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean

By Constantine P. Cavafy

Constantine P. Cavafy (Kavafis), born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1863, one of the most original and influential Greek poet of this century.

From Wikipedia

The Laestrygonians are a tribe of giant cannibals from ancient Greek mythology

In Greek mythology  a cyclops, is a member of a primordial race of giants, each with a single eye in the middle of its forehead.

In Greek mythology, Poseidon was the god of the sea.

Moon, mountains and stars!

A friend of mine recently shifted to Dehradoon and I was reminded of  something I wrote long time back on one of my trips to Dehradoon –  now famous as the capital city of Uttarakhand with business flourishing, real estate scoring high, traffic competing with national capital!

But to me the city still is high on appeal and would always remain so, for it is the gateway to the Queen of Hills  – Mussorie… a place with its own charm … those video game parlors, ice cream vendors and scores of newly wed couples posing in weirdest of poses!!!

Here is what I saw on my way back from Mussorie to Dehradoon on a full moon night

Such beautiful scenes with full moon views….

Mountains bathed in silver lather….stars below & moon above…a full perfect round moon at its maximum glow and so much closer than normal

On my one side were the lights of Doon city sprawling across like a handsome intricately woven carpet with illuminated bulbs as the motifs creating colourful scintillating aura—

On the other side were the solid timeless huge mountains bathed in silver lather with trees drenched in pale white light.

The sky had stars too – numerous of them –  though shining still but looked more like the outwitted contenders who have lost their chance and could not woo the mysterious sensuous beauty ‘night’ and hence appear as small & less glowing in the presence of the winner

And the winner is none other than my most coveted charmer and a night person like me ‘MOON’…

Moon, which in this otherwise dark & dull night, seems to be the only formally dressed suitor having won all possible contests and now finally waiting for its true soul mate and partner , the ever present black beauty ‘night’ to accept him and begin the never ending affaire and start on the primal universal slow dance — the identity of intimate pure love.

An Oasis

These following verses are dedicated to the Golden Temple, I wrote them on my way back from Amritsar.

An Oasis

The traffic is buzzing at one end

The cars are running at the other end

The executives are running the time race

The kids are also trying to keep up the pace

In short the life is going past

No one would deny it’s too fast

And in midst of all

I found a place

Where life flows

Where peace stays

Where mind calms

A place where meditation is instant

And connection with God is constant

A place called GOLDEN TEMPLE

The colour of gold symbolizes heart

Full of desires whether its finish or start

And then there is the water

Calm & serene & forever flowing

Similar to our soul which is always glowing

The people may say whatever

But for me it is the Water

Which has soaked in the divinity

And will give the soothing effect till eternity

But as the trend is

It’s a complete package

For the soul & the heart

And it’s worth a visit

If you want your real journey to start…
